SALT LAKES
You cannot travel around the region without coming across one of the famous salt lakes.
The largest in Europe award goes to thee calm waters and fine white sanded Mar Menor. At its deepest it reaches only 7 metres. Without currents or waves, the Mar Menor is an ideal place for families with small children. Adults can enjoy a tipple at one of the many cafes, restaurants and bars. La Manga which sits on a small stretch of land separating the lake from the sea attracts the worlds elite athletes and football teams to train, taking advantage of the Mar Menor's warm micro climate.
Torrevieja (which translates to old town) is a strictly no high rise city, surrounded by sea on its south and the blue and pink salt lakes to its north. Since 1985 they have been declared a regional nature reserve, attracting a wide variety wildlife with bird watches coming from across the globe.
